HISTORY
The Manor
of
Alvington
was
acquired
by King
William I
at some
time
between
the Norman
Conquest
(1066) and
1086.
Carisbrooke
was the
chief
stronghold
of the
Isle of
Wight in
the 6th
century,
and
Alvington
Manor was
the
principal
manor of
the
Island.
Carisbrooke
Castle was
built on
the site
of an
Anglo-Saxon
Fortress
around
1100 on
part of
Alvington
Manor
Estate.
Carisbrooke
Priory was
founded on
the
Alvington
Manor
Estate (to
the East
of the
current
Manor
Farmhouse)
by Baldwin
de Redvers
around
1156.
Remains of
the
monastic
buildings
can still
be seen in
the Manor
Farmhouse
buildings.
It is
believed
that
during the
16th
century
Alvington
Manor Farm
was owned
by an aunt
of Jane
Seymour,
and that
she stayed
at the
Manor
before she
married
King Henry
VIII.
Brockley
Barns has
been
created
from the
milking
parlour
and
threshing
barn of
Alvington
Manor
Farm. The
barns were
purchased
in 2000,
along with
5 acres of
land, and
the
cottages
have been
open to
guests all
year round
since June
2004.
